Being presented with the Merchant Navy Medal at Trinity House London by Admiral Lord West of Spithead.

Strange really, as I had met Admiral West some 28 years earlier on May 23rd 1982. He was Commander West (The Captain) of HMS Ardent which had been our protecting warship as we landed 42 Commando in San Carlos Water in the Falkland Islands. Sadly Ardent was sunk by Argentinean Aircraft whilst alongside us in San Carlos. He was brought across to Canberra and we transported him down to South Georgia, where we met the QE2 and took her troops (Five Brigade) back up to San Carlos. Commander West was then taken aboard QE2 and repatriated back to the UK.

My retirement party in the Wardroom of the P and O liner Arcadia after 43 years at sea.
I am pictured with Peter our Technical Stores Manager.

My sister Barbara Meeke (Hill) left Cavendish School in 1961 and became a Student Nurse at the DRI. She retired as the Divisional Nursing Officer North Nottinghamshire in 1999. She lives with her husband Robert in Holymoorside near Chesterfield. I married Catherine Fern and live in Crich.
