1983 Henry Chas and Linda.

This photo was taken at the Brailsford Ploughing Match. This is the last photo I have of Henry with his brother Charles, pictured with them is Linda. Charles for a while lived with his first wife Eve in the early 50’s at No 41 Mapperley (the corner house above the old Mapperley Chapel) that Selina and Tom Watchorn lived in some years earlier. The house at that time I think was owned by my Grandfather Charles Hill, but I don’t think he was the owner when Tom and Selina lived there.

I do remember Charles living there as I was beaten to within an inch of my life by my mother after being removed from the house screaming as I watched the Coronation on a new invention called a TV. I was terrified seeing these little people moving around a TV screen.

Shortly after this Charles moved down to Kent after a major family incident at the Farm.

So What Happened To Me After Leaving The Farm In 1968 As A Farm Labourer?

Well in January 1968 I went down with John Creswell and Alan Woolley to the Boat Show at Earls Court in London. There I picked up a leaflet for the New Zealand Shipping Company who required both Engineer and Navigating Cadets for the September intake. Ian Harper of West Hallam was already serving as a Refrigeration Engineer with them. I duly applied and got taken on by their Parent Company the P and O (I think they must have been pretty short of applicants). On September 9th of that year I boarded a train to South Shields to commence my four and a half year cadetship with them.
