January 1906

The Ilkeston Pioneer carried a full report on the Cricket Supper held on Friday December 1st. About 40 members sat down to an excellent repast provided by Host and Hostess Beer.

An Ambulance Smoking Concert was held at the Black Horse Hotel on Monday December 11th. Mr W H Thornley was responsible for the arrangements.

Christmas Day was a fine clear day; within the church the decorations of holly and evergreens lent the needed touch of colour. These were arranged by Mrs Lane, assisted by Mrs Churchill, the Misses M Hart and M Beer, and Mr F Durow, and were kindly sent from the gardens at Shipley Hall.

March 1906

On the 27th January the performers in the Sunday School Entertainment were treated by Mrs Lane to a visit to Nottingham Pantomime “Humpty Dumpty” Carriages were reserved on the train going and returning and seats reserved at the Theatre. The youngest members who were not able to go to the pantomime were later entertained at tea, with crackers, games etc at the Vicarage.

The third annual concert was held on 8th February in aid of funds for the Mapperley Cricket Club.

On Thursday evening 22nd February a social gathering was promoted by Mr and Mrs Wright.

April 1906

It was announced that another Flower Show be held on 18th August and be called Mapperley Flower Show, and not held under the auspices of the Church Institute.

May 1906

A very successful dance was held at Easter for the Cricket Club. Mr Downing presided with his usual ability at the piano, and dancing was kept up with great vigour and enjoyment into the early hours of the morning.

A concert was given by school children on April 27th.

Mr W H Thornley was thanked for freely giving his time to cleaning and planting out in the Institute garden.

October 1906

A full report was given on Mapperley Flower Show which was held on Saturday, 18th August. The cricket ground was again utilised. Mr E Miller Mundy kindly lent a group of plants and Mr John Beer also kindly staged an exhibit of plants. An excellent supply of refreshments was provided by Mr Birkin.

November 1906

Improvements in the Church Institute are almost complete, the billiard table will be shortly ready for use and a “house warming” party will soon be held to mark the completion of the work.


December 1906

On Monday 12th November a social gathering was held to mark the completion of the sundry improvements and additions to the Church Institute. A new fire place has been put in on the east side and a small but excellent billiard table has been provided. Further improvements are to be taken in hand, by the enclosing of the verandah, so as to make a suitable cloak-room and smoke room on dance nights, and also to be fitted up as a riffle range.
