January - February 1969 Rector: Rev. J E Martin In Memoriam Wilfred George Hawley Wilf Hawley died on Tuesday, 17th December 1968, at his home in Mapperley. He was seventy-one. He was vicar’s Warden, Church Council Treasurer and Correspondent to the Managers of Mapperley Primary School. He was a retired miner. But titles meant very little to Wilf and he was never over conscious of the various offices that he held. He accepted the trust of those who elected him to these positions, and then got on with the job. To these tasks he bought a rare combination of talents – quiet efficiency, deep wisdom, grasp of the situation and sense of purpose and a subtle and sometimes biting sense of humour. But, above all, charity. Wilf loved his home, his village and his church, and he gave himself unstintingly to all. He was always “there”. He saw good times and bad. He knew triumphs and disappointments; he has seen the church full, and he has seen it empty. But he was always “there.” He never moved from his position – home, life and Church; not separate compartments, but all mixed up in the same bundle. In my opinion a very great Christian gentleman. A man who, like Paul, ran his race and finished the course. The village community and the Church community will surely miss him, and we shall, with his family, know sadness at our loss, but we shall also rejoice when we think of his life and witness. Surely, this man walked with the Lord. He was loved and respected by young and old alike.
