1966: Woodside No1 Drift (Derbyshire) sinking started 1948, and opened in 1950 by the NCB was closed 29th April 1966 after 13 years.

Originally it was called Shipley Drift as it was situated at Shipley between Ilkeston and Heanor.

Highest manpower was 387 in 1964-1965 and in the same year the highest output of 174,089 tons.

A Swedish Sandvik steel bank conveyor was installed in the drift (first of its kind in UK).

Adit position of the Drift 43/4444/420602, 261 ft (79.5m) above sea level and Sams shaft 433/4444/455712, 272 ft (83m) above sea level.

A major pumping scheme was installed at Woodside shafts near Ilkeston dealing with around 3,000 gallons of mine waters per minute from several old mines surrounding with connections through to Woodside. Some 993,633,000 gallons pumped in 1990. Hugh Gaitskell, Minister of Fuel and Power (Lab) made a visit to the mine.

1966 - Coppice Closed After 91 Years

Coppice colliery (Derbyshire) sunk 1875-1876 by Alfred M Mundy was closed in August 1966 after 91 years
The colliery was taken over by EM Mundy, then purchased by Shipley Colliery Co and a third shaft was sunk in 1926

Highest manpower was 1,632 in 1962, with the highest ever output in the same year of 900,930 tons. 
Underground water was pumped to the surface.
Situated at Shipley between Ilkeston and Heanor and North East of Smalley. Mapperley had merged with Coppice in 1965.

  • Low Main -1934 stalls to 1940 when first conveyors installed, hand-filled panels to 1964, trepanner 1954, 2 shearers  but panels affected by water -26/8/1966,
  • Three Quarter 26/12/1953, 22½” section, heading abandoned -1966
  • Kilburn -29/9/1945
  • Ashgate coal 2’ 4” (0.71m), clod 4’ 0” (1.22m) to 5’ 0” (1.52m)
  • Mickley coal 2’ 3” (0.69m) –31/12/1965
  • Piper 3’ 0” (0.91m) + 4” (0.10m) top coal left plus 3” Gees Apr 1952-15/7/1966, at first a trepanner face then hand-filled, with the first shearer being installed Feb 1962, worked out .

An experimental shearer with special low seam supports were tried in both Piper and Low Main. Longwall hand-filled advancing faces in Ashgate taking 80% with 100% of Mickley.
