West Hallam Railway Station

George Donald Walker - Signalman

Station
George Donald Walker, born 1902, photo taken by the West Hallam signal box.
He lived in Ilkeston at the time and he also spent some time working at the Ilkeston Railway Station.

On 1st April, 1878, the Great Northern Railway opened its Staffordshire extension through West Hallam, with a station “West Hallam for Dale Abbey” and trains stopped at Derby North, Breadsall, West Hallam, Ilkeston and Nottingham. The line linked to the old Nottingham Victoria and Derby Friargate stations. I remember going regularly by train from West Hallam to Awsworth to visit my Grandma. The last passenger train departed from West Hallam on 5th February 1964. The station was closed to goods on 7th September 1964, and then in February 1968 the railway closed altogether.
